Dental Bonding

San Mateo Dentist | Robert P. Choi, DDS

I mprove the appearance of your teeth in just one visit with dental bonding. Dental bonding is a fast and virtually pain-free procedure, because it requires no tooth preparation, and you may even avoid the need for anesthesia. Ask Dr. Choi if you are a good candidate for dental bonding.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding imgD ental bonding is a procedure in which resin, a tooth-colored a durable plastic material is applied to teeth and hardened with a special light. This process "bonds" the material to the tooth to restore or improve your smile. No tooth removal required, and little advance preparation is needed for dental bonding. Anesthesia is often not necessary unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth. Dental bonding takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth to complete.

Dr. Choi may recommend dental bonding for the following reasons:

  • To repair decayed teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To close gaps between teeth
  • To make teeth look longer
  • To improve the shape of teeth
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
  • To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

What's the Procedure for Having a Tooth Bonded?

D r. Choi will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of your tooth. The surface of the tooth is roughened and covered with a conditioning liquid to help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. The tooth-colored, putty-like resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is then used to harden the material. After the material is hardened, Dr. Choi will trim and shape it, and polish the surface to a natural finish.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Bonding?

A dvantages:
Dental bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. Unlike veneers and crowns, which require several visits because they are customized and manufactured in a laboratory, bonding can be completed in one visit for a single tooth. Additionally, the least amount of tooth enamel is removed, compared with veneers and crowns. Unless dental bonding is being performed to fill a cavity, anesthesia is usually not required.

D isadvantages:
Compared to other restorative procedures like crowns, veneers, and fillings, dental bonding is not as strong or as wear resistant. Dental bonding is often recommended for minor cosmetic changes, temporary correction of cosmetic defects, and for use in areas of very low bite pressure, like front teeth.
